Your text is drawn once per page, diagonally at 45 degrees through the centre, in bold Helvetica at 28% opacity in a neutral grey. The size scales with the page so it reads the same on A4, Letter or a slide. The default text is CONFIDENTIAL; type anything else — DRAFT, SAMPLE, a name, a date — before converting.
The watermark is added as vector text in the page's content, so it prints sharply at any size and does not bloat the file.
It is a visible label that discourages casual reuse and makes the status of a draft obvious. It is not security: anyone with a PDF editor can remove content from a page. For documents that must not be altered, combine the watermark with the recipient's expectations, not with hope.
Every page receives the same mark. To watermark only some pages, split the document, watermark the part you need, and merge it back.
